Kagome Higurashi lives in modern Tokyo in the year 1997. Her family own a decent size Shrine in which the Tree of Ages is one of its focal points.

Kagome Higurashi was your normal everyday junior high school student, born in the fall of 1982 in modern Japan. This all changes on her 15th birthday, when a centipede demon pulls her into the Bone Eater's well at her family's shrine and takes her 500 years back through time.

While she was in the past she frees a half demon named Inuyasha. He had been sealed to the Tree of Ages for 50 years prior to her arrival. Due to circumstances Kagome learns that she was born with the legendary Shikon Jewel hidden inside her body as a result of being the reincarnation of the deceased (and later reawakened) priestess Kikyo. Kikyo Just before dying had instructed her sister to burn the jewel with her body to keep the Shikon out of the reach of demons and their evil intensions.

Later Kagome accidently shatters the jewel while trying to save a boy from a carrion crow that had stolen it.  Thus she teamed up with Inuyasha to gather all the shards of the jewel.

Due to being a reincarnation she resembles the priestess in looks, which causes her emotional pain throughout the series as she deals with being unfavorably compared to Kikyo during the beginning of the series.

Kagome is a very friendly, strong-willed, often stubborn, compassionate and sweet-natured girl. She cares deeply for everyone around her and helps people where ever she can. While on her adventure Kagome she falls in love with Inuyasha. Most of the time she spends adventuring with him but she also returns to Tokyo just to give school exams.
